Cell phones

I was in the elevator today with three other people .  Each one was on their iphones.  I wondered what they were all looking at.  One was obviously playing a game because you could hear it.  The other was probably on Facebook and the third maybe checking emails.  I was the only one standing there without my phone out.  What did we do before cell phones?

Sure I have Facebook feeds to look at and email to check.  But do I have to do it every spare moment I have?  I wonder if people get on their phones so they can avoid having to stand there in silence in a little box with strangers.  Or if they do it because they think it makes them look cool.  I now see older people walking down streets texting while crossing the street.  It used to just be kids.

Maybe we're getting used to being fed information every moment of the day and if we're not, then we think we're missing out on something so earthshattering that it would just destroy us not to hear about it.  We already know that deaths have occurred due to texting and driving and most of those texts were "where you at?"   Just stupid.

I refuse to be one of those people who stare at the electronic devise 24/7 when there are so many more interesting things to look at, like life.

Halloween

My birthday is 2 days before Halloween. I remember every year, either in the office or going out, the theme around my birthday was always Halloween. I always hated that. I think its an ugly holiday. Its not even a holiday. But over the years its turned into one. I even had someone say to me Happy Halloween last year. What's so happy about it? I drive around the neighborhood and see people decorate their lawns with tombstones, skeletons and spiderwebs. Maybe people think its cute. But these are the same people that then turn around and decorate their homes for Christmas. That seems ironic to me but I dont think they get it. Halloween is a pretty dark day. I think the bottom line here is that we entertain too much evil. People love to watch dramas and scary movies. I know people that watch only junk. And then they end up with alot of drama in their own lives and wonder why. Talk about tv shows - every other show is about a witch or vampire or someone who talks to the dead. I know that stuff has always been around but lately we've been saturated with it. I have Netflix just so I can order shows that are a little more on the bright side. What we put in front of us effects us. If we feed ourself with bad food, we get sick. If we feed our minds with bad stuff, we still get sick. People think they are unfazed but it does effect you. I know a woman who said she was a Christian but she allowed her kids to watch scary movies on Halloween every year and allowed them to watch all the Harry Potter movies. As they got older, her son joined a gang and her daughter became promiscuous. Would they not have been better served if they were not allowed to watch so much evil growing up? I think so. But what do I know?

Oklahoma

Why are our children dying? 9 children died in the Oklahoma tornado which oddly enough seemed to have a school as its target. I read an article on CNN today which said many people are sending prayers through twitter and #prayfor has become very common. But this is making atheists mad. Ricky Gervais said he sent money instead because who is hearing our prayers. God is. That's who's hearing our prayers. Of course action is a big part of faith, but prayer moves the hands of God. Was this tornado God's will? Of course it wasn't and anyone with even the smallest idea of who God is would know that. But we havent been praying enough. We can't pray in schools. We can't even have the ten commandments or a nativity set in any public area. We remove God from our lives and then we want to blame Him when disaster strikes. When are we going to learn? Atheists will always foam at the mouth at the slightest mention of God but that does not sway those who firmly believe in Him. And for those of us that do, we need to be convicted to pray more. Alot more.

One day a man is walking down the street and falls into a big hole. Its dark and cold in there and he says, how did I get here, this is not my fault. It takes him a very long time to get out. The next day he walks down the same street and falls into the same big hole. Again he says its not his fault and again it takes a long time to climb out. The third day he walks down the street, falls in the hole. But this time he says, this is my fault. He gets out easily. The fourth day he walks down the street and walks around the hole. The fifth day, he walks down a different street. This man sounds like an idiot at first. Can't he see the big hole in the ground? But how many times have we done the same thing? Changing jobs just to end up with the same one we didnt want in the first place. Ending up in the same types of relationships, friendships or romantic. As hard as it is to believe, we've all done it. Until hopefully one day you see the light and you make small changes. You walk around the hole. If you have to walk around the hole for a few weeks, at least one day it will hit you to keep making changes and then you go down a different street. Maybe it takes courage and we think we dont have the courage that it takes. Maybe its comfortable walking down the same street. The courage is there. I believe. In all of us. We just have to find it.

Nuts on both sides

After the election, a co-worker of mine (who's 77 years old) was kicked out of her daughter's house because Obama won the election. Wow. That's the first time I've ever heard anything like that. I've known democrats to do weird things but this takes the cake. I have to believe the daughter is a little unbalanced to begin with. I mean, you would have to be. I had an incident with another co-worker at another job once who was a bleeding heart left wing nut. I mean nut with a capital "N." We went to lunch one day and apparently I said something conservative that she didnt like and she gave me the silent treatment after that for a few weeks. I kept asking her what was wrong and she said nothing. This when on until I decided to email her since email is non-confrontational (good for people who can't communicate). She said I said something that she didnt like and she knew that telling me wouldnt change my mind anyway and that she didnt want me to get mad. Get mad??? The silent treatment without telling me what was wrong wasn't making me mad???? I wrote her back after I got over the initial shock and told her that she was right, whatever she says would not change my opinions and that we should just agree to disagree. So after a few days she decided I was worthy of her kindness and started talking to me again. I decided to let the whole incident go away and didnt hold any grudges. It just showed to me why her marriage was in the dumps if she communicated in that passive agressive way and that she had more problems than I could help her with. The thing that stuck me is that democrats are so pro civil liberties and freedom of speech. Wasnt my freedom of speech taken away from me when my co-worker punished me for voicing an opinion? Are democrats pro free speech only if you say things that agree with them? Is that how it works? Ironically, I went to lunch with this same co-worker a few weeks later and I dont remember what we were talking about but she actually said that she was glad Ronald Regan got shot at. Wait a minute. So would she have been even happier if he was killed? Is that what I'm hearing? Now I know for a fact I never said anything that insane. Why was it ok for her to say that but I got punished for whatever conservative leaning thing I said??? I wish someone would explain this to me. Needless to say, I'm not friends with that person anymore (for other reasons). Bottom line - this country is divided and will stay divided. Both sides dont want to come together. If you're a democrat and lean to the center, you're criticized (Hillary Clinton). If you're a republican and are moderate, you're called names from the right. Maybe there should be a third party where centrists from both parties meet in the middle. Anything's possible.
