I turned 50 a couple of weeks ago. This whole year I was terrified of the idea until it happened and now I realize its no big deal. I don't feel any different. A friend of mine told me I can now tell people to piss off. I think there's some truth to that. We live most of our lives worried about what other people thing, that at some point, we need to drop that burden. I know I do. I also discovered that maybe I'm not married because I didn't want to marry. I certainly had opportunities but there was something there that kept me from doing it. I always thought it was a bad thing but now I don't think that anymore. Maybe its just a part of who I am. Its parents and society that force the idea of marriage upon women (mostly) and that you are defective if that doesn't happen to you. I don't feel defective. I know that others made me feel that way. Why is it that married people want everyone else to be married? If marriage is so great, why is the divorce rate 50%? And of the 50% that remain married, how many of them are staying together for the kids or because its cheaper than spousal support?
Being free is not just about not caring what people think about you because you're single. Its about not caring about anything that they think. I know people in their 70s who still care what others think and I see how oppressive it is for them. How horrible to live all those years and never be free of that thing.
I believe one thing to keep in mind is that appearances can be deceiving. You might see someone who seems to have a perfect life with everything going on but underneath it all, there's a lot of misery. And that might be the person who you are trying to get approval from. Doesn't make sense. Our thoughts, our decisions, our daily life should never be influenced by what others think, even if they are family members. We still love them but we can't live our lives for them.

Stupid is as Stupid Does
Recently a picture of that knucklehead Kim Kardashian came out that defies all rational thinking. Is America this dumb? Why does anyone follow her? Do we not have our own interesting lives to cultivate? I'm just at a loss. Her aim was to "break the internet," I suppose by re-tweeting the idiotic picture of her until the entire system breaks down. It was re-tweeted a lot but with scathing remarks. The best thing we could have done was completely ignore it. But because its too stupid to believe, everyone passed it around, with their heads photoshopped on it, with a donkey's ass photoshopped on it, etc. Yeah, those are funny but its still being talked about. That's what she wanted. I don't think she even cares that people make fun of her, as long as you just talk about her. She's an embarrassment to the Country. And her mother of all people applauded her. WTF? I know we have freedoms in this country but some people use this freedom to act as inanely moronic as humanly possible. Oh the fear of becoming irrelevant.

Cell phones
I was in the elevator today with three other people . Each one was on their iphones. I wondered what they were all looking at. One was obviously playing a game because you could hear it. The other was probably on Facebook and the third maybe checking emails. I was the only one standing there without my phone out. What did we do before cell phones?
Sure I have Facebook feeds to look at and email to check. But do I have to do it every spare moment I have? I wonder if people get on their phones so they can avoid having to stand there in silence in a little box with strangers. Or if they do it because they think it makes them look cool. I now see older people walking down streets texting while crossing the street. It used to just be kids.
Maybe we're getting used to being fed information every moment of the day and if we're not, then we think we're missing out on something so earthshattering that it would just destroy us not to hear about it. We already know that deaths have occurred due to texting and driving and most of those texts were "where you at?" Just stupid.
I refuse to be one of those people who stare at the electronic devise 24/7 when there are so many more interesting things to look at, like life.

Halloween
My birthday is 2 days before Halloween. I remember every year, either in the office or going out, the theme around my birthday was always Halloween. I always hated that. I think its an ugly holiday. Its not even a holiday. But over the years its turned into one. I even had someone say to me Happy Halloween last year. What's so happy about it? I drive around the neighborhood and see people decorate their lawns with tombstones, skeletons and spiderwebs. Maybe people think its cute. But these are the same people that then turn around and decorate their homes for Christmas. That seems ironic to me but I dont think they get it. Halloween is a pretty dark day.
I think the bottom line here is that we entertain too much evil. People love to watch dramas and scary movies. I know people that watch only junk. And then they end up with alot of drama in their own lives and wonder why. Talk about tv shows - every other show is about a witch or vampire or someone who talks to the dead. I know that stuff has always been around but lately we've been saturated with it. I have Netflix just so I can order shows that are a little more on the bright side.
What we put in front of us effects us. If we feed ourself with bad food, we get sick. If we feed our minds with bad stuff, we still get sick. People think they are unfazed but it does effect you. I know a woman who said she was a Christian but she allowed her kids to watch scary movies on Halloween every year and allowed them to watch all the Harry Potter movies. As they got older, her son joined a gang and her daughter became promiscuous. Would they not have been better served if they were not allowed to watch so much evil growing up? I think so. But what do I know?

Oklahoma
Why are our children dying? 9 children died in the Oklahoma tornado which oddly enough seemed to have a school as its target. I read an article on CNN today which said many people are sending prayers through twitter and #prayfor has become very common. But this is making atheists mad. Ricky Gervais said he sent money instead because who is hearing our prayers. God is. That's who's hearing our prayers. Of course action is a big part of faith, but prayer moves the hands of God. Was this tornado God's will? Of course it wasn't and anyone with even the smallest idea of who God is would know that. But we havent been praying enough. We can't pray in schools. We can't even have the ten commandments or a nativity set in any public area. We remove God from our lives and then we want to blame Him when disaster strikes. When are we going to learn? Atheists will always foam at the mouth at the slightest mention of God but that does not sway those who firmly believe in Him. And for those of us that do, we need to be convicted to pray more. Alot more.
